Viva BrisVegas

Brisbane, the third largest city in Australia, seems to have many nicknames, BrisVegas and Brisneyland to name a couple. All these names imply that the city is a party-town and full of action, and well it definitely has a whole bunch of clubs and late night restaurants, even a 24/7 casino, but I guess with nicknames that invoke images of Las Vegas and Disneyland/Disney World I expected a whole lot more. Overall though, Brisbane was fun.


Adam spent the week (M-F) working and loving it. I spent my week exploring the city, going to some of the museums, and for the most part enjoying my afternoons at the Suncorp Piazza at South Bank watching the Australian Open on a big screen (sadly I wasn’t able to get to Melbourne to watch any of the action live). South Bank, an area on the bank of the Brisbane River, is a gorgeous park land, with a man-made beach, and lots of restaurants and cafés.


On the weekends Adam and I explored the capital of Queensland together, going to the Art Gallery and the Police Museum, and of course taking the train to the Gold Coast. While we aren’t big beach goers (hating sand the way we do) we went to one of the 4 amusement parks that are constantly being heralded as a must do. We opted for WB Movie World, as it seemed to offer the most rides that didn’t involve water (Wet-n-Wild was an immediate no and as Sea World here doesn’t have a killer whale that too got rejected). We were able to get to the park by public transport, that was awesome, and we were able to see the whole park and do all the rides in a matter of hours. Which was a good thing as all the parks are only open 10am – 5pm, even in the summer, doesn’t that just boggle the mind?

Our last stop before heading back to Sydney was the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary where Adam got to cuddle a koala. Only in Queensland can someone actually hold a koala. Because of their sharp claws other states have prohibited handling of the koalas.

Brisbane is a beautiful city, with amazing public transport, and lots of great places to just chill out but after a week we were more than ready to head home.
